  1. This source juxtaposed both positive and negative, contrasting someone's birthday (positive) with taking the SATs (negative). However, the sarcasm in referring to the SATs as the "best birthday present ever" reveals a focus on the negative. Maybe this person needs to be thinking more about birthday cakes and balloons.

  2. This particular status update also shows how people can sometimes be amused by situations that they wouldn't have expected to occur. The majority of high school students know that they have to take the SATs at some point, but the chances of having to take them on your birthday is very low. When situations like these pop up, it's fun to inform others of the irony. Strangely enough, I also had a unique situation happen on my last birthday. Instead of having a gathering to celebrate my birthday, I went to two other people's parties instead. Even though going to parties is a fun way to spend your birthday, I couldn’t help but be entertained by the irony of the situation.

  3. What I like about this, and I commented on this in my project as well, is how we just know that he's being sarcastic. In our society of social networking, we intuitively know exactly what a person means without voice inflection or explanation. We just know. And I think that's awesome.

  4. I agree Brian, and I also feel like electronic messaging has been a huge catalyst for this. There's no way to portray voice inflection or facial expression through a text message or even a blog posting like this. And thus, as a rising generation we are developing a very sensitive radar for sarcasm or underlying meanings in words.Apparently electronic messaging has some positive side-effects after all.

  5. My original intention of posting this status was, like Erica said, to poke at the irony of having something so awfully grueling on a day I'm supposed to celebrate. I said it sarcastically to show my frustration at the fact I would have to take the SATs on my birthday. I also used the word 'best' to imply (sarcastically) how this was obviously going to be the worst part of my day. I chose Facebook as the medium to do it because even though I told all of my friends that day at school, I felt like everyone that received my news feed should feel my pain. :(
